Cub Scouts Sell Popcorn To SA Mayor Castro

Cub Scout Top Popcorn Sellers Open the Alamo Area Council's Popcorn Fall fundraising Season with Mayoral Support.

SAN ANTONIO - Sept. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- The Boy Scouts of America, Alamo Area Council kicks off their annual Trail’s End Popcorn Fall fundraiser on September 20, 2013, with standout Cub Scout salesmen, Jefferson Tipton, age 8, Ethan Young, age 10, and Miles Chilton, age 9, selling the first popcorn bag of the season to San Antonio City Mayor, Julián Castro.  Media is invited to see the Scouts knock on the door to City Hall to sell the first popcorn bag to Mayor Castro this Friday, September 20th from 9 – 9:20 a.m. at 100 Military Plaza, San Antonio, TX 78283.

“Selling Popcorn is hard.  It requires public speaking, salesmanship, and persistence.  Like camping and outdoor adventure, selling a quality product like Trail's End Popcorn prepares our youth to face a challenging world with a heart of service, commitment, and leadership to find success,” says Michael de los Santos, Scout Executive for the Alamo Area Council, BSA, based in San Antonio, Texas.

Cub Scouts, Tipton, Young, and Chilton have found success helping their Pack 548 raise almost $38,000 last year in overall sales.  Seventy percent of the funds raised from the Popcorn Fall fundraiser go to support Scouting programs council-wide.

"These young people are learning lessons that will last a lifetime," Mayor Julián Castro said. "I'm honored to help kick off this year's campaign."

San Antonio Police Chief, William McManus, purchased a bag of Caramel Corn to launch last year’s campaign.  Starting Saturday, September 21, 2013, be on the lookout for Scouts selling popcorn in front of various local businesses and in your neighborhood through Saturday, October 26, 2013.  Scouts will have traditional favorites such as the Classic Caramel Corn priced at $10.00 and new additions like the tasty Jalapeno Cheddar Cheese that sells for $15.00.

“Besides being grateful for Mayor Castro buying Scout popcorn from our Cub Scouts, we value the unified focus on youth we have with the City of San Antonio.  We look forward to continuing the partnership in serving our kids,” says Angel Martinez, Communications & Marketing Director with the Alamo Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

More than 28,500 youth in the Alamo Area Council supported sales of over $1,620,000 worth of popcorn during the Trail’s End Popcorn Fall Fundraiser in 2012.  Over $560,000 of those funds helped support an ideal year of scouting for kids and their communities.
