Follow on Google News | CIHs Equipped and Ready for National Preparedness MonthThe industrial hygiene community and Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIHs) provide knowledge and expertise in support of National Preparedness Month.
Emergency preparedness requires attention to not just specific types of hazards, but also to steps that increase preparedness for any type of hazard. National Preparedness Month encourages people and communities to be ready in the event of a natural disaster as well as technical, accidental or terrorist hazards. These events may include everything from wildfires, earthquakes and floods to hazardous materials incidents and biological threats. The industrial hygiene community and Certified Industrial Hygienists in particular are well versed in identifying, preventing and responding to many of these situations. This is due to their ability to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and control a wide range of chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic stressors. “This month celebrates the 10th anniversary of National Preparedness Month,” said Tracy Parsons, CIH, Administrative Program Manager at ABIH. “We all benefit when we are prepared to respond to natural or manmade emergencies. Before an event occurs, CIHs can identify potential risks and plan how to respond. After an event occurs, these same professionals are experts at mitigating risks associated with many types of hazards, some of which may not be immediately recognized. These can range from biohazards and ionizing radiation to chemical hazards.” For over 50 years, the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) has been promoting the industrial hygiene profession and administering the CIH program. Today, ABIH is the world's largest, premier organization for certifying professionals in the practice of industrial hygiene.
