"Is it ever too late to be someone else?"

Adventure novel catapults readers into ethical gray spectrum

MORRISVILLE, N.C. - Sept. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- Morrisville, N.C., September 17, 2013 — Guy Orgambide’s new novel, An Upward Draft, will catch readers wide-eyed and alert, drawing upon their deepest instinct to outlast and press on. An Upward Draft airdrops us into Richard Keiffer’s world of breath-heaving survival. Readers of A Feeble Drift—Guy’s debut novel—will recall this turbulent world, and newcomers to it will become quickly immersed.

In An Upward Draft, readers observe Richard grappling with the existential question, “Is it ever too late to be someone else?” It is a vivid concern for those whose peak is just barely in the rearview mirror. Who determines the “peak” in life, anyway? Richard learns that his own perception of this can be shifted and that he can translate his experience into power, albeit at the price of an intense and disruptive reeducation thrust upon him by Madame, the maturely flamboyant owner of a South American wine estate.

Unlike many protagonists, Richard is an incredibly flawed character. He was swept away from his wife and children years ago but he rarely looks back. Yet, his unabated will to endure makes him honorable and his self-aware humor makes him personable.

What sets An Upward Draft apart is the intriguing way it confronts readers with both modern and timeless dilemmas. Real-world decisions are rarely made in black and white—rather, they are made along that dubious gray spectrum we often try to avoid. Can it ever be justified to kill another human being? Is it ever admirable to kidnap someone for their own sake? Is it ever virtuous to commit blackmail? Is there an appropriate time to threaten the life of someone's elderly mother for a perceived "greater good"?

Richard is forced into scenarios we hope to never encounter. When we find him dodging live bullets, and shortly after deploying sly jokes, we realize that heroes are indeed born—but a number of them are forged in the fires of fate. Readers’ mettle will surely be tested by An Upward Draft—albeit from the comfort of recliners, not the back of a stolen blood-drive van headed for the Romanian border.
