A Correctly Installed Windshield Can Save Lives

Sept. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- A cracked windshield can be dangerous, but an improperly installed windshield can be deadly. And according to statistics, 8 out of 10 auto glass replacements are not installed correctly.

Debra Levy, president of the Auto Glass Safety Council writes that “As many as 85 percent of so-called replacement windows are installed wrong.”

According to an article on Auto Glass on the Web.com, an improperly installed windshield is more than an annoyance; it is a potential hazard.

“Having your windshield replaced can be a pain, especially if you’re driving down the road a day or two later, only to feel a breeze coming in through the edges of your freshly-installed glass,” their website states. “But an incorrectly-installed window isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a serious danger.”

An incorrectly installed windshield is a danger in case of an accident. A windshield that is not installed properly can easily pop out in the event of an accident, which would allow the roof to collapse onto the vehicle’s occupants.

In some cases, improperly installed windshields can pose a serious danger to vehicle occupants. A haphazardly installed windshield will provide little protection in case of an accident.

“The thing I wish that drivers knew was that the windshield is the No. 1 safety restraint in your vehicle,” says David Beck, a technician at Windshield Express near Salt Lake City.

“This is not the place to cut corners on and go with the cheapest price,” he says.

Many unsuspecting customers hire the cheapest repair shop they can find. Most are unaware that many repair shops are not qualified to do windshield installation.

Because there are no federal laws regulating the windshield installation industry, experts recommend that consumers ask questions to their local windshield installation shops, to find out whether the shop is qualified in handling windshield installation.

Experts recommend asking the repair shops if they use original equipment glass, which is usually of higher quality. They also suggest asking the repair facilities how long the car will need to sit after the installation. Repair shops who say that the car can be driven right away, indicate an unprofessional facility. Most vehicles will need to sit for at least one hour after repairs in order to allow the adhesives and bonding agents to set properly.
