Prime ONE Contracting Selected by the EPA for Heavy Duty Emissions Testing Initiative

Prime ONE Contracting awarded contract by the US Environmental Protection Agency

KENTWOOD, Mich. - Sept. 11, 2013 - PRLog -- Prime ONE Contracting (POC) announced today it received a contract that was awarded last month by the US Environmental Protection Agency for crucial Heavy Duty emissions testing equipment in support of the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory (NVFEL) in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In accordance with the Renewable Fuel Standard program there is an increased emphasis placed on testing vehicles operated on renewable fuels.  With the creation of Green House Gas Emissions Regulations the USEPA is undertaking a comprehensive program to enhance its capability to conduct low level emissions testing of the highest precision and accuracy for Heavy Duty vehicles at NVFEL.

Federal regulations for motor vehicle exhaust emissions and fuel economy specify the use of chassis dynamometer test equipment.  The purpose of the chassis dynamometer is to duplicate the forces a Heavy Duty vehicle encounters while traveling on a road by modeling these characteristics using a stationary vehicle on a rotating surface (or rollers).

For this initiative, the EPA selected POC to provide a MAHA-AIP, Heavy Duty, CDM72” MIM (motor-in-the-middle principle) chassis dynamometer with 4x4 capability to provide additional testing capabilities to support both current and future regulations as well as a range of evaluation and development activities for NVFEL’s new Heavy Duty Test Facility (HDTF) currently under construction.

The chassis dynamometer to be provided by POC is designed to accommodate a wide array of test vehicles ranging from 20,000 to 80,000 lbm GVW with either single or dual axles powered by internal combustion engines (using gasoline, oxygenated fuels, alcohol fuels, gaseous fuels, and diesel fuels), electric motors & storage devices, hydraulics & hydraulic storage devices as well as fuel cells.  This includes; front wheel drive (FWD), rear wheel drive (RWD), four wheel drive, and all wheel drive (AWD) vehicle configurations with a full range of powertrain technologies including energy conservation provided from regenerative braking.  Test procedures such as EPA UDDS for Heavy Duty Vehicles, New York Composite, New York Bus, Orange County Bus, EUDC or NEDC cycles and others are supported for emission measurement testing.

This is the sixth MAHA-AIP chassis dynamometer with 4x4 capability procured by the EPA-NVFEL within the last 9 years.  The first MAHA-AIP ECDM48” Medium Duty 4x4 system was installed in 2004 followed by four MAHA-AIP ECDM48” Medium Duty 4x4 systems in support of the Renewable Fuel Standards program between 2010 – 2012 for a new Environmental Cold cell, SC03 Hot cell, and Ambient test facilities.
