Different Roads Home hosts this annual event to encourage people in Charlotte to join together, make noise and take action to finish the fight against HIV/AIDS. This year, Wells Fargo will join the effort by illuminating the Duke Energy Center lights in Different Roads Home’s signature colors to support the event and cause.

In addition to the musical performances, the Hope and Inspiration Awards will be given to community leaders in Charlotte who have helped in the effort. This year’s recipients will be Rodney Tucker, Executive Director at Time Out Youth, and Shane Windmeyer, Executive Director/Founder of Campus Pride.

Jeanne White-Ginder, the namesake of the organization’s food pantry, will also be on hand at the event as a guest speaker. Mrs. White-Ginder’s son, Ryan White, became a reluctant international celebrity after being diagnosed with AIDS in 1984 when he was 13 years old. Following Ryan’s death in 1990, Jeanne became a key player in the HIV/AIDS crisis and continues Ryan’s legacy today on the lecture circuit by educating young people about the disease.

The most recent study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that over 55,000 new HIV cases are occurring each year.  Among those cases, the South has the greatest number of people living and dying from HIV/AIDS.  In North Carolina alone, the new HIV infection rate is 40 percent higher than the U.S. rate.  Mecklenburg County specifically has the highest number of HIV/AIDS cases in the state, with an average of 7 new cases of HIV reported per week. Different Roads Home is amplifying local efforts to change these statistics by ensuring community education about the disease and by making sure people facing HIV/AIDS have the help they need.

About Different Roads Home

Different Roads Home is a Charlotte, NC based 501c3 nonprofit organization providing supportive services to individuals living with chronic illness. Based on the idea that the road “home”—to health, education, awareness, and personal clarity—is not the same for everyone, Different Roads Home is unique in that it provides personalized services to meet the needs of each client, and harkens back to the grassroots, volunteer-based organizations of the past that created real change in times of need. The organization is anchored by three core programs—The Jeanne White-Ginder Food Pantry; The Good Road Project, a mentoring program; and a series of social-based support groups. Different Roads Home also serves the community as a whole to educate and raise awareness to all individuals regardless of their station in life or experience with the disease states.
