Discover the History of Clearwater’s Harbor Oaks Community

Local authors team up to share the story of the area using vintage images

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Sept. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series is Clearwater’s Harbor Oaks from local authors Tom Adamich and Gary Dworkin, MD, with a foreword by James Anthony Schnur and an introduction by Mike Sanders. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images chronicling the growth and change of this Clearwater community.

As post–World War I Florida developed and prospered, it became known as a popular destination for seasonal residents of wealth. America’s growing industrial complex and the subsequent increase in the number of moneyed individuals in a variety of business sectors led to an influx of people hoping to take advantage of their newfound awareness of the climactic, economic and social benefits of Florida coastal living.

On Florida’s west coast, Clearwater’s Harbor Oaks neighborhood became one of the noted residential havens for several industrialists, celebrities and professionals during the Florida land boom of the 1920s, as well as during the Great Depression and post–World War II eras.

Images of America: Clearwater’s Harbor Oaks profiles the community (listed in the National Register of Historic Places), its primary developer (Dean Alvord), noted architects/artisans, local and national history and the homes of many of America’s elite individuals of the day.

Highlights of Clearwater’s Harbor Oaks include:
•   The book covers community design and urban planning, illustrating the first planned community in Florida to incorporate deed restrictions and community governance.
•   See the who’s who of the post-Victorian industrial revolution in the area.
•   Highlights the local history of Clearwater, Pinellas County, Tampa Bay and the state of Florida’s geographical subdivisions.
