New Book Highlights the History of Manhattan, Kansas

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Sept. 4, 2013 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series is Manhattan from local author James E. Sherow. The book boasts more than 200 vintage and modern images chronicling the growth and change of this Kansas city.

A New England mind-set has cast a long shadow on the history of Manhattan, Kansas. By 1855, social reformers flocked to build a community in a beautiful valley where the Kansas and Blue Rivers meet. They established a land grant university that eventually became Kansas State University, formed close ties to nearby Fort Riley and learned to adjust their lives in alignment with the ecological forces of the Flint Hills.

Today, as one of the most flourishing cities in Kansas and the nation, Manhattan retains its reformist outlook built upon the bedrock of the university and the fort. Images of America: Manhattan celebrates this history.

Highlights of Manhattan include:
•   A collection of rarely before seen images, the majority of which come from the collections at the Riley County History Museum and the Special Archives in Hale Library on the Kansas State University campus.
•   The book highlights the mutual relationship of the university and the city.
•   A portion of the author’s profits from the sale of the book are being shared with the Riley County History Museum.
