CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Aug. 31, 2013 - PRLog -- Palmetto Childproofing Inc, in conjunction with the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), announces that September is Baby Safety Month.  This year marks the 30th anniversary of the month long campaign and serves to raise awareness of keeping babies safe both inside and outside the home.

Mike Bost, vice president of Palmetto Childproofing, says that all aspects of baby safety are important, but that his focus this year is to remind parents of the dangers of baby monitor cords.

“Baby monitor cords can pose a strangulation risk for babies and toddlers,” says Bost, who has been awarded the CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL CHILDPROOFER designation by the International Association for Child Safety (IAFCS), recognizing those individuals in the childproofing industry who have met the exacting standards set by the IAFCS as to professional education, knowledge, and experience in the field of child safety, ethics, business practices, installation of child safety products, and child safety consulting.

“The hazard with baby monitors pertains particularly to video monitors,” says Bost, “when the camera is placed too close to the crib in an effort to get a good vantage point for viewing the crib.”  He urges parents to check the location of monitors and other products with electric cords, including those mounted on the wall, to make sure cords are out of their child’s reach.

“During home safety evaluations, I often see video monitor cameras mounted out of reach on the wall, but the cord is still within reach of the crib—don’t forget about the cord,” says Bost.   He recommends that monitors and cords be kept out of reach at least three feet away from the crib.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) knows of seven deaths and three near strangulations since 2002 involving video and audio baby monitors which were placed too close to the crib.

“The crib is the only place where a baby or toddler is left alone and unsupervised for long periods of time,” says Bost.  “With millions of video monitors in use,” he adds, “it’s critical that parents know of the dangers associated with these devices and take the proper measures to keep their child safe.”
