Aug. 28, 2013 - PRLog -- Leeds City Council ‘City Signs’ is one of the first local authorities in the UK to secure accreditation as a permanent Traffic Sign operation, producing signs that are CE marked to a new European Standard.

City Signs, which provides direct services across the local authority and the external trade, has achieved accreditation after meeting the stringent requirements of the standard, entitled BS EN12899-1:2007.

Based at a purpose-built production facility in Limewood Approach, Seaford, City Signs has a broad remit, which includes providing Permanent Traffic Sign Production for the Leeds, Calderdale and Bradford areas.

Over the years, the organisation has contributed to major signing schemes, including ‘Euro 96.’ It has also built-up a strong presence in the region producing commercial signage, supported by large format digital printing capabilities in-house.

City Signs worked closely with supplier Rennicks UK, to meet the obligations of the new standard.

Martin Race, Operations Manager of City Signs said: “After a huge team effort and a tough auditing process, we gained the certificate of conformity to BS EN12899-1:2007.

“We have been accredited by a notified body (SGS) to manufacture signs in accordance with the standard – and now apply a CE mark sticker to each sign produced, identifying that the sign is compliant after installation on site.

“Without complying with this new standard, fixed, vertical road traffic signs erected on the highway will not be legal.

“We have achieved the standard through a team approach, creating a strict maintenance schedule for each piece of static machinery on the workshop floor, as well as linking sign design with wind load software, which calculates wind load above sea level based on sign location, size of sign and post detail. We have also provided guidance on the required number of fixing channels, and their size and space apart during the production process.

“Prior to the audit a number of changes were introduced, including a new material batch board to  display a clearer way of obtaining the relevant batch number for the substrate or material used in each sign produced, and enabling product traceability, together with an audit of suppliers of goods ensuring they complied with the standard.

“We can assure our customer base that all materials used within the production process are fully compliant to the standard, with the fundamental components of sign face materials, Class R3B, Class RA2, Class RA1, substrates and channel.”

Another aspect of BS EN12899-1;2007 that City Sign was able to adhere to was the provision of documentary evidence of procedures and training, ensuring that the organisation had a quality managed system in place together with a trained and competent workforce.

Martin added: “We are delighted to have made the grade with this new accreditation. Our unit may be small in size but it has a big influence in displaying information on the highways throughout West Yorkshire. Now, with the new standard in place our thinking is clear and we are certainly moving in the right direction.

“Our prime objectives looking forward are to engage with other local authorities and public bodies, assist other local government sign shops in meeting the new standard and, where possible, be part of the supply chain.”
