ICT Africa Awareness of History of Telecommunication in Africa through Article and Video

ELMIRA, N.Y. - Aug. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- As part of its support of the rapid deployment of information and communications technologies (ICT) in Africa, ICT Africa has unveiled an article and a video on a brief history of telecommunications in Africa.

The article briefly reviews the forms of communications in Africa prior to colonialism in the 19^th century, the advent of telegraphy and the introduction of telephony a decade after it was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. The article also explores the attempt and challenges by African leaders to develop one network connecting the entire African continent with microwave links and copper networks. The article reviews some of the modern fiber optic submarine and terrestrial networks currently being deployed in Africa.

By summarizing the history of telecommunications in Africa, those with an interest in ICTs in Africa can put in perspective the evolution of ICTs in Africa prior to the current ICT revolution. This will hopefully serve as a motivation for those developing telecommunication networks in Africa.
