The 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 Earns Five-Star Safety Score From the NHTSA

This is the first pickup truck to receive a five-star overall score since the NHTSA revised their testing standards a few years ago. Both Ford and Ram have already been through the testing and not fared as well. The 2014 Ram 1500 and the 2014 Ford F-150 only carry a four-star overall safety rating. General Motors estimates the Crew Cab will account for 60% of total Silverado sales, so it was the first model to be tested.

The previous generation received a four-star overall score, so this new model is quite the improvement. Breaking down each category, the Silverado scored four stars in the rollover test and five stars in the side and front crash tests. The vehicle has not yet been tested by the other major safety organization, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Standard features used to obtain the high safety rating include the solid, fully-boxed frame, a total of six airbags, antilock brakes, and front seat lap belt pretensions that tighten in the event of the crash. The vehicle also comes with many available modern safety features like Forward Collision, Lane Departure, and Safety Seat, as well as a rearview camera and a system to prevent trailer swaying. The Silverado also comes with the emergency alert OnStar system that will contact emergency services automatically in the event of a crash.
