Follow on Google News | New Nonprofit Maine Tenants Justice League Formed to Improve Housing ConditionsTenants, homeowners and those who are homeless in Maine now have the potential to improve their housing conditions and basic quality of life by working with the MAINE TENANTS JUSTICE LEAGUE, INC.
MTJL was incorporated as a public benefit nonprofit corporation whose mission is to empower and educate tenants and homeowners about their rights and responsibilities, to provide information, analysis and opinion to state legislators and government leaders about current housing issues and to provoke positive legislative amendments to allow for balanced and fair landlord, tenant and homeowner laws. The MTJL Board of Directors is comprised of GinA Turcotte, Founder and President, from Augusta, Maine; Timothy Cason from Bowdoinham, Maine; and Richard Ritenour from Kennesaw, Georgia. The board will have a total of eight directors which will be filled by executives from other nonprofit and governmental agencies. “A core principle of the Maine Tenants Justice League is that everybody has a basic human right to have safe, suitable shelter and to be treated fairly and respectfully,” The MTJL has a special legal interest in the homeless population and people who live in dangerous or substandard housing. Further, the organization plans to survey tenants about their experience with violations to the warranty of habitability and general landlord relations to get a sense of what problems exist already, and what changes to law may be needed to strengthen the safety of tenant housing. If individuals need assistance with their housing situation or want to create an alliance with the MAINE TENANTS JUSTICE LEAGUE, INC., please contact help@mainetenants.org or leave a message at 207-358-8887.
