WACO, Texas - Aug. 20, 2013 - PRLog -- WHAT:
Antioch Community Church is providing backpacks and school supplies for more than 450 students at Provident Heights Elementary School for the 2013-2014 school year.

WHY:

Antioch is located in one of the poorest zip codes in the entire state of Texas. Many kids in the neighborhood are struggling in school, which is a huge barrier to getting out of generational poverty. One way Antioch is addressing this challenge is by supporting Waco Independent School District in practical ways.

“As a church, we want to get behind Waco ISD and support parents, students and the administration. Providing every student at Provident Heights Elementary School with a backpack and school supplies seemed like one of the most practical things we could do to help. We want the kids to get off to a great start in school and know that someone cares for and believes in them,” said Antioch’s Director of Community Engagement Josh Lawson.

The money used to purchase the backpacks and supplies was provided from Antioch’s building fund. As Antioch expands its campus, a percentage of the funds raised for the building is then reinvested into various needs throughout Waco, the United States and the world.

Antioch also hosts the STARS Mentoring Project, which provides mentoring for local, at-risk third through fifth graders at Provident Heights and Waco Charter School. Antioch is a part of a larger, community-wide initiative with other churches to mobilize 1,000 mentors for students in the Waco Independent School District.
