ALEX, Egypt - Aug. 18, 2013 - PRLog --

Alexandria Egypt August 15, 2013, Sheraton Montazah Hotel announced its joining and full support to the ‘Road to Awareness’, Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ annual associate fundraising campaign. Now in its 6th year, the campaign aims to raise US$500,000 for UNICEF, the world’s leading organisation giving thousands of children from some of the poorest and most remote communities the opportunity to go to school and to get a better start in life.

Starwood’s ‘Road to Awareness’ campaign includes local fundraising initiatives across its 250 hotels in Europe, Africa and the Middle East as well as an annual fundraising bike ride. With the funds raised, Starwood and UNICEF aim to support 20 schools in Nigeria, directly benefitting an estimated 3,000 nomadic children, and 15 schools in Cameroon where more than 5,000 children will have access to literacy and numeracy training in addition to thousands of children in Egypt who have no access to schools. The funds will also be used to organise awareness-raising campaigns about the importance of going to school, and to train 150 teachers.

Atef Wilson, General Manager of Sheraton Montazah Hotel said “We’re proud to participate in this important activity  and be part of developing the lives of thousands of children in Egypt through enhancing their literacy”.

UNICEF UK Executive Director David Bull said: “UNICEF is committed to creating a world in which every child has access to education. There are currently an estimated 61 million primary school-age children around the world who are not in school, and whose future opportunities are severely limited. We are delighted that Starwood’s Road to Awareness campaign will help to raise vital funds for UNICEF’s work in Africa, enabling some of the most disadvantaged children in the African countries to go to school and helping them to fulfill their potential.”

Complementing the local associate fundraising initiatives, a group of cyclists consisting of senior leaders and other hotel representatives will climb the mountains of Austria in the Tyrol and Salzburg counties from August 28-30. The riders will cycle 410 kilometres, ascending seven climbs with a gradient of 8,860 metres over a three-day period.

“At Starwood, we believe that every child has the right to go to school and we are convinced that education is the door that opens opportunities to become fully independent members of society,” says Michael Wale, President of Starwood Hotels & Resorts for Europe, Africa & Middle East. “I am incredibly proud of the amazing efforts of our 46,000 hotel associates and brave cyclists who enthusiastically engage in raising funds as part of their ongoing commitment to doing the right thing. Together with UNICEF we hope to make a huge impact on to the lives of children in Egypt and Africa”.

Last year, Starwood raised US$750,000 through the company’s ‘Road to Awareness’ campaign, helping to provide more than 50,000 children in African countries with an access to pre-primary education.

About the Starwood and UNICEF partnership

The launch of the Check Out for Children programme by UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Sir Roger Moore KBE in London in 1995 is the cornerstone of the long-standing partnership between Starwood Hotels & Resorts and UNICEF. Through the programme, guests at participating Starwood hotels across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia are invited to add $1 (or local currency equivalent) to their hotel bill, as a donation to UNICEF’s work for children. In addition to this, in 2008 Starwood and UNICEF launched the annual Road to Awareness hotel associate fundraising campaign. Over the past 18 years, Starwood guests and associates together have raised more than $30 million for UNICEF to improve the lives of vulnerable children around the world and provide them with access to education. Building on this, Starwood launched Make a Green Choice earlier this year. Hotel guests in Starwood hotels globally can participate in this new initiative by declining daily housekeeping services. In Europe, Africa and the Middle East, for every day of participation, Starwood provides guests in return for saving water and energy with the opportunity to make a $5 donation in support of UNICEF’s on-going work to protect vulnerable children from the impact of climate change. .
