VICTORIA, British Columbia - Aug. 14, 2013 - PRLog -- A new way to experience Canada’s West Coast promises a walking immersion into nature, culture and island hospitality.  Trek & Treats (http://www.trekandtreats.ca), a Victoria, BC based boutique tour provider, offers 3 to 6 day self-guided hiking and multi-sport tours with overnight stays in waterfront lodges and cozy rural inns.

“Our tours offer an alternative to existing wilderness hikes. We want to make the coastal landscape more accessible to active travelers,” says Trek & Treats’ founder, Marion Grau, adding that hiking Canada’s West Coast has been synonymous with wilderness routes, where hikers carry their supplies and tents for several days on rugged, sometimes dangerous terrain. “Our tours provide a challenging and rewarding experience along with first-class hospitality, leaving hikers refreshed and rested even after several days on the trail.” Hikers can expect daily luggage transport and support along the route. Breakfasts are provided and fresh local fare is available along the way.

The “Salish Shores Discovery Trail (http://www.trekandtreats.ca/salish-shores-discovery-trail)”, so named by the organizers after the Salish Sea which surrounds southern Vancouver Island, crosses the southern tip of the Island and leads through rugged wilderness parks, coastal landscapes, gentle farm country and seaside communities. Daily walking distances and levels of difficulty can be adapted, although hikers should expect a 12 km (8 mile) hike on hilly terrain at the minimum. Bicycling can be integrated as part of the trek, as can kayaking and even horseback riding.

To date, participants have come from as far away as Holland and as close-by as mid-Vancouver Island. They share a love of nature, hiking, and low key travel. All had been on walking tours in other countries and were delighted with their Canadian experience. In addition to the famous West Coast landscape of ancient firs, arbutus meadows, beaches and snow-capped mountains, participants also reflect on the up-close and personal quality that is so intrinsic to traveling on foot. “I had no idea the area had such lively rural communities with such a rich history,” commented a hiker from BC. “Everyone is so trusting and welcoming. I feel like I’m at home here,” says a hiker from Europe.

Hiking tours began in April and will continue well into the fall (http://www.trekandtreats.ca/location). Arrangements can often be made on relatively short notice for 2-6 people and can be personalized to accommodate different interests and schedules.
