GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. - Aug. 14, 2013 - PRLog -- The shift in American politics with the first black President Barrack Obama isn’t the only change in direction for the country. Increasing we’re seeing movies starring black actors that tell a different story about America that was largely dodged in traditional movies. The mass media shift we see today in America began decades ago with a handful of blacks laying the foundation for change in shows like Red Fox’s, Sanford and Son; Sherman Hemsley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherman_Hemsley) in The Jeffersons and Roots, a powerful TV miniseries starring LaVar Burton as Kunta Kinta graphically portraying a different story of growing up in black America. Pioneers like Sidney Poitier the first black actor to win the Academy Award in 1963 for the movie Lilies in the Field have ushered in a new era of mass media created by black artists, entertainers and actors.

Many would agree progress has been slow with tremendous economic and political hurdles for blacks to overcome in America says article writer, James Rickman, iHuman Evolution. But without a doubt their genuine creativity has enabled the black media to gain widespread appeal among consumers.

Today, black entertainers and African American news media are catching hold among mainstream audiences across all ethnic groups. Now black actors and entertainers like Will Smith are leaders in defining the black struggle with breakout roles like The Pursuit of Happyness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z95wF2Cdye4), based on a true story about poverty in America. Poverty is now a universal concern among all ethnic groups black, white, Hispanic and Asian; no one is immune.

By landing powerful positions in the media, black America has been able to tap into overall global movie industry and entertainment revenue of about $88 billion up 70% 2013. Hollywood movies are set to exceed $32 billion in revenues for 2013. The movie industry in the United States is growing at 5% vs. China’s 35% annually growth rate. We’ve seen tremendous demand in the media content developed in the United States being consumed overseas reports Mr. Rickman.

Revenue movie industry

Increasingly we’re seeing more stories about African Americans like The Butler starring Oprah Winfrey and Forrest Whitaker that highlight the role blacks played in building America. The Life of Jackie Robinson starring Chadwick Boseman tells the story about the historic signing of the first big time black athlete by the Brooklyn Dodgers. My favorite actor, Denzel Washington scores big on Hollywood’s A list of black actors in 2 Guns, a high speed action thriller also starring Mark Wahlberg. Black comedians / directors like Tyler Perry in Madea Christmas have a strong following that generate consistent revenue. Now we’re seeing a steady stream of black actors getting mainstream leading roles in Hollywood.

Even in animated movies such as Shrek, we find black actors like Eddie Murphy breaking into the lime light. Digital screen cinema 3D movies are helping the U.S. audience (primarily ages 12 – 50 year old) viewing experience at reasonable ticket prices average under $60 for family of four versus theme parks and sporting events such as football, baseball and basketball (Motion Picture Association of America). For Black kids and children alike, I love Eddie Murphy’s; The Nutty Professor movies that create a strong character with flaws able to laugh in enjoyment while caressing those tender moments. Eddie is an actor with special talents able to connect with the audience intimately playing comedy, drama and action roles. As Professor Sherman Klump, Eddie Murphy is comically appealing to kids and adults. Professor Klump has his ups and downs just as in real life. The Nutty Professor movies have revenue over $250 million worldwide.

Among the wealthiest black actors, we see Tyler Perry topping the list at $400 million net worth. Will Smith $200 million, Samuel L. Jackson $150 million, Denzel Washington $140 million, and Martin Lawrence $110 million. But we’re still looking for a breakout black women actress to top the charts. So far women like Oprah Winfrey $1 billion, Janet Jackson $150 million and Halle Berry $70 million lead all black women actor / entertainers.

Another favorite of mine, Jamie Fox is a black actor with Oscar level acting skill that rivals Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. My favorite movie starring Jamie Fox is The Soloist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_Spu2nO0jw) about a mentally challenged man with great music talent playing the Cello while living in poverty on the streets. He befriends a white report having his mid-life crisis played by Robert Downey Jr. Foxx is a gifted versatile actor capable of playing any role action, drama, and comedy in the movies. His most recent movie White House Down got mixed reviews at the box office. But Foxx scored a huge hit with his recent performance in Django Unchained, a movie directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Black media is also becoming a source of news and information not just entertainment with journalist like Don Lemon, CNN News anchor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Lemon) and Michael Strahan (ex-NFL New York Giants star) on Live! With Kelley and Michael. A Pew Study shows that blacks primarily get their news (86%) from television. But we find a significant rise in blacks getting their news, entertainment and information from Internet sources. A jump in blacks using Twitter and Facebook is notable with online shopping occurring more frequently among blacks in America says Mr. Rickman.

The Black Story in America

African American directors and story tellers like Spike Lee, Salim Akil, Janice Cook, Paris Barclay, Mario Van Peebles and Robert Townsend continue to deliver unique mass media stories that highlight real life experiences. The story of blacks in America is honestly refreshing and paints a vastly direct picture in some cases than traditional white media. The characters are complex real African American people with real flaws and real talents not because they are black but because they are human beings despite hundreds of years in the United States being marginalized as not worthy.

The days of racial profiling and economic slavery are drawing to an end. We can all see clearly now a bright shining light at the end of a short tunnel that remains. The day is coming soon when black and white Americans will sit alongside one another as brothers and sisters with an understanding of respect and fairness. It’s the true dream of prosperity America always sought but was never able to achieve. Equal opportunity is every Americans responsibility to ensure for our children comments writer James Rickman, iHuman Evolution.
