The basis of this campaign is to address the misconception surrounding a rare cancer like gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) by bringing to light the fact that it is indeed, not rare. Over 100 types of cancer are considered rare because fewer than 20,000 people per year are diagnosed. About 5,000 people are diagnosed with GIST each year in the United States. That’s 13 diagnosed each day—thus, Rare 13. On August 13, social media will explode with messages about this campaign, which will feature videos, information and a myriad of ways for individuals and businesses to participate. Individuals and businesses are being invited to connect their name with an organization whose primary purpose is to cure cancer.
