Viral Campaign Launched to Raise Awareness for Rare Cancer

Aug. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- The Life Raft Group launches the Rare 13 awareness campaign on August 13, 2013, an opportunity for individuals and businesses to partner in a media-driven effort highlighting our society’s view of “rare” cancers. We predict millions of people through Facebook, Twitter, local and national media, as well as many other communication outlets, will be hearing, discussing and reading about Rare 13 for years to come.

The basis of this campaign is to address the misconception surrounding a rare cancer like gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) by bringing to light the fact that it is indeed, not rare. Over 100 types of cancer are considered rare because fewer than 20,000 people per year are diagnosed. About 5,000 people are diagnosed with GIST each year in the United States. That’s 13 diagnosed each day—thus, Rare 13.

On August 13, social media will explode with messages about this campaign, which will feature videos, information and a myriad of ways for individuals and businesses to participate.

Individuals and businesses are being invited to connect their name with an organization whose primary purpose is to cure cancer. By joining this growing social movement, people will have a part in changing the perception of rare cancers. By using videos and social media, people can speak out and support this important cause in a fun, interactive way.

The Life Raft Group is an organization that for the past 10 years has supported patients with GIST through information, advocacy and research aimed at finding a cure.
