BALTIMORE, MD,–Bernice Johnson, Senior Director of Risk and Analytics for Walmart, has been selected to receive a Managerial Leadership-Industry award by Career Communications Group, Inc., publisher of US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine, Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology magazine and Women of Color Magazine.

This award will be presented during the Women of Color Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Conference, which is scheduled to take place October 17-19 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas. The 2013 Women of Color STEM conference is a multicultural event for women in scientific and technical careers. The conference features several key speakers who will address the underrepresentation of women in these disciplines. The conference will also host training seminars that will highlight important topics such as leadership and professional skills, diversity and inclusion, technical leadership and innovation and career outlook.

Having joined Walmart in 2011 as the Director of IT Security and Compliance, Johnson’s  leadership and organizational skills soon earned her a spot as the Director of IT International Compliance. Her six-month IT International Compliance pilot in China lead to a multi-national license agreement, and was a major accomplishment for Walmart.Johnson strives to be a role model for all women and minorities. To help achieve this goal, she created a shadowing program for more than 800 people. The program allows leaders to share their stories and mentor young people to help them develop leadership skills.

Tyrone D. Taborn, CEO of Career Communications Group, calls the awards long-deserved recognition for talented women. "These women are outstanding achievers in very competitive fields where women do not always get a fair shot at leadership positions," Taborn says.

"Women make up more than half of the population of this country and are receiving more than half of the college degrees, yet too many women in today’s work force are trapped in low-paying and low-grade-level jobs," Taborn adds. "Given the growing diversity of the current work force, employers must commit not only to leveling the playing field but also to addressing those inequalities that limit women from achieving their full career potential."

One of the many goals of the National Women of Color STEM Conference, Taborn says, is to provide employers with a unique opportunity to recognize those women within their ranks who are already successful, thus sending a clear message that there is room for many others who choose to follow.
