Follow on Google News | MSI Celebrates 80th Anniversary with 80 at 80 ExhibitThe Museum of Science and Industry heralds in their 80th anniversary with a display of 80 rarely seen museum artifacts.
Museumgoers may celebrate the Museum's history as they explore artifacts from exhibits decades past. An anatomical transparent mannikin from 1970 as well as a giant Paul Bunyan statue from the Museum’s 1950’s World or Hardwoods exhibit makes their return. So does a Royal Doulton vase that stands 6 feet tall and was last featured at the 1893 World's Fair. Visitors may not only explore the Museum's history, but science and innovation's. Many artifacts outline the path from antique advancements to modern-day progress. Featured are a 1909 Jones Live Map Meter, a precursor to modern GPS technology, as well as a wall-mounted American Bell Telephone from 1893. Some display items point towards technology's future, like Google Glass eyewear and a Velodyne LiDAR sensor navigation system, which may someday be integrated into self-driving automobiles. Meanwhile, MSI's 80 at 80 also features an array of quirky, unconventional items that have long since seen their glory-days. These include a 54-pound deep-sea diving helmet from the 1800s, a 1925 Spectochrome contraption that used six colored lenses and a bulb to cure patients via color therapy, and a "dog treadmill" used on farms in the late 1800s to churn butter or power grain mills. Founded in 1933, the Museum of Science and Industry is excited to celebrate the past 80 years, while looking forward to the next, as a leader in hands-on education and innovation in Chicago's community.
