Career as Sleep Technician


A Sleep Technician supports you to figure out why you can't sleep healthily by conducting sleep studies and monitoring your brain waves. Training as Sleep technician provide knowledge to prepare students to work in an entry-level position performing sleep studies to help physician’s diagnosis sleep disorders. Sleep technicians are also referred to as polysomnographic technicians.

Sleep lab technicians’ work in hospitals or independent sleep labs and sleep clinics, monitoring patients for an array of sleep disorders. They analyze and score sleep records that doctors use to diagnose patients and prescribe treatment. 

The program is designed to provide the fundamentals that students need to go to work in a sleep lab, but students can't take the certification exam right away. They need to put three months internship in a sleep lab before they can take the exam.

They also monitor the patients undergoing sleep studies and work with those returning for a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine used to treat sleep apnea.

EMPLOYEMENT OPPORTUNITY

Due to growing awareness of sleep disorders and the dramatic affects they have on everyday life, the need for sleep technologist is on the rise.

The National Sleep Foundation recently found about 20 % of U.S. adults suffer from daytime sleepiness, some because of self-imposed sleep deprivation and some due to sleep disorders keeping them awake at night.

In a study conducted by the online industry magazine 'Advance for Sleep' the majority of responders actively working in Polysomnography reported an average income of around $45,000.

The magazine also suggests that opportunities for Polysomnographic Technicians are increasing as new sleep-study facilities continue to open across the country.
