CHICAGO - Aug. 7, 2013 - PRLog -- Children’s Reading Foundation of Greater Chicago (CRFGC), a local early literacy organization, is partnering with Adlai Stevenson Elementary School to help Chicago preschool students develop the literacy skills crucial to their future academic and social success.      According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, two out of three fourth graders do not read proficiently.  To make matters worse, the majority of them struggle in class, year after year, because over 85% of the curriculum depends on the ability to read fluently.  Adlai Stevenson Elementary School is working to combat this trend.      Students at Adlai Stevenson Elementary School will have access to 4000 free books this summer thanks to a partnership with the Children’s Reading Foundation of Greater Chicago’s Read Up summer literacy program.  Read Up: Stop the Summer Slide is a summer literacy program that aims to reverse the “summer slide”, a situation where students lose up to three months of reading skills when school is out.  “We were able to supply our primary students with books that will help them to be better readers and better learners. CRFGC also supports our home-school connection as we strengthen the bond between parent, student, teacher and school. We are fortunate to have them as our partner,” says Katherine Konopasek, Principal of Adlai Stevenson Elementary School in Chicago, IL.      Lemi Erinkitola, Executive Director of Children’s Reading Foundation of Greater Chicago states, “Reading is one of the most critical skills in life and we are committed to supporting the young readers in the Chicagoland communities.”     The Read Up summer literacy program is funded by the National Children’s Reading Foundation, the Regina D. Weiss Literacy Legacy and a grant from the U.S. Department of Education through the Innovative Approaches to Literacy Program.
