The Top Safety Pick+ designation is a new award, even more stringent than the Top Safety Pick award. To earn it, vehicles must receive a rating of “Good” on roof, side, head restraint, and frontal moderate overlap tests, as well as an “Acceptable” rating on the small overlap test.

Earning an “Acceptable” rating on the new small overlap test is what sets Top Safety Pick+ vehicles apart from the competition. This new test simulates the effects of a collision in which a vehicle hits a stationary object like a utility pole or tree, or a collision in which a car collides with an oncoming vehicle. The test involves striking 25% of the vehicle’s front end against a 5-foot-tall barrier while going 40 mph. Small overlap collisions are particularly dangerous for drivers and passengers.
