Follow on Google News | A Glimpse Into Memory As Aurelian Makes Its Cairns PremierSometimes memories are all there is, but what happens when reality gives way to memory and memory gives way to imagination?
By: Centre of Contemporary Arts Taking the audience back to her hometown of Ayr, key creator and director Genevieve Trace draws from visual theatre, film, audio storybooks, physical and verbatim theatre in the making of this experimental hybrid performance. In a coup for Regional Queensland, Aurelian will premiere in a regional tour before being presented at the Brisbane Festival in September. Contemplating the death of her sister, Trace examines the ritual of memory, along with the impact of death, loss and grief and in the search for identity, how comfort and strength are found. “There’s a phrase from Clare Bowditch’s song The Thing About Grief that says ‘but black is the colour cause it doesn’t seem to have an end’. “I relate to this in the experience of my own grief. The nature of grief and memory changes over time but in saying this, my sense of loss has not ended, or faded even.” Basing the work in a rural community, with the support of Metro Arts’ Work In Residence Program 2012, Trace gathered personal stories from individuals who have experienced loss. These narratives form the basis of a theatrical journey into the depths of a person’s psyche when dealing with the desire to remember with precise clarity those lost. “Aurelian is a scaffold of biographic stories investigating memory and the negotiation of individual histories and ultimate truths in which memories can change and morph with the passing of time,” Trace explains. By the end of the performance, multiple voices and stories are overlaid on each other, images collide and fracture the narrative and worlds begin to blur as the audience becomes a part of the experience. Contemplating the potential audience for the piece, Trace believes the subject matter has universal resonance that spans young adulthood to adulthood. “The form resonates more with young people. It takes on board how they view and absorb information. “Although the work is heavily based on verbal storytelling and we have ensured that this facet of the work is highlighted, these stories have been digitised in their collection and are performed between the realms of live and digital worlds.” The Burdekin Cultural Complex is supporting the project in championing a tour to regional Queensland including Cairns, Mackay, Townsville and Rockhampton. Drama Queensland is also supporting the project with the development of extensive on-line teacher resources.
