As an artist Thomas has found he has a talent for reaching others on deep and emotional levels that words alone do not. He had discovered this through the words of others who have been exposed to his art. Thomas has done much art work in a virtual community and this has made it possible for him to share his art on an international level. Having had people from the other side of the world relate to his art in ways that he had intended, has been a strong confirmation that his work does successfully reach others emotionally. This experience has been very rewarding. Thomas is using the website www.Kickstarter.com to gain funding for a work of art that will be presented on and international level as well as a smaller local level. His hope is that this work will help bring many people together, and through sharing in this art gain a better understanding of the effects of mental illness. One thing from Thomas's experience has taught him is that one of the most difficult elements of dealing with a mental illness is that few people understand what is happening to you and you find yourself feeling isolated. Working to create a world were others will not feel this isolation has become a mission for Thomas. Kickstarter.com is a crowd funding organization. Crowd funding is a source for people to raise money to accomplish a variety of goals. Kickstarter is a crowd funding site that focuses on creative projects. Kickstarter.com facilitates the ability to post a project proposal that others can pledge money to. This makes it possible to raise funds from many people in small to large increments. There is however a deadline to raise all the funds or the project goes unfunded. A key component of this type of crowd funding is that others share the proposal with people they know. In this way the word can reach millions and have the best success of finding people who see the value in the project and will contribute. Thomas is working raise $9,500 dollars to be able to make the following project a reality. The funds need to be raised by August 28, 2013 Connected Together Across Solitude A virtual install will be brought into a physical space with music, in Bangor Maine to bring to light the hardships of mental illness. A world of people connected by art & music through cyberspace. We will create an art installation within a virtual 3D world where it can be visited by people from around the world who login with an avatar. The installation will be abstract expressionistic in style and have the intent of communicating, on a deep emotional level the hardship of those who suffer from mental illness, particularly depression. A video with music and physical prints will be created from this virtual 3D installation. This experience will then be brought into a physical space in Bangor Maine and stay there for 4 weeks. There will be 3 events to mark the opening, midway through and a closing event a week before the show is dismantled. People who visit the space in Bangor will see videos playing on two large screens as music plays. They will also be able to explore the virtual version on a computer that will be available. This will give them opportunity to discuss and share in realtime the experience with people from around the world. During the events, invitations will also be sent through the virtual world community. People from around the world will be able to be at the event in the virtual space and people in Bangor will see and hear them over one of the large screen monitors. A video feed of the people in Bangor will be streamed to those in the virtual space. This will be true real time sharing across the world. Framed prints will be hung on the walls and will be available to buy along with unframed prints and art books created from the virtual installation. A book will be provided for visitors to write, in their own words about their experiences with mental illness. The words in this book will be scanned and added to the virtual installation in the 3rd week of the show. A new video and new prints will be created and shared the last week for a final end of show event. Mental illness has placed a large mark on my own personal life. As an artist I feel greatly inspired to create art that raises awareness on mental illness. Art and music both speak in deeper ways than words alone can do. Through this medium more people can gain a sense of the suffering that so many go through. Understanding creates tolerance and caring and this is something that is badly needed to help other. This medium can also have the effect of giving those who have had mental illness effect their lives feel less isolated.
