Greenspeed to break land speed record for a petro diesel powered pickup using vegetable oil as fuel

BOISE, Idaho - Aug. 2, 2013 - PRLog -- Greenspeed, a student club

Greenspeed is attempting to break the land speed record for a petroleum diesel powered pickup truck using straight vegetable oil as a fuel

         FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Boise, Idaho – The Boise State University student club Greenspeed has been working towards this goal for the past two and a half years. Redefining the meaning of a grassroots effort, the students have built a world record capable vehicle in record time. Along the way, they have broken the world record for vegetable oil powered vehicles three times, the first to fall was the existing record, after which they broke their own record during successive trips to the Bonneville Salt Flats in western Utah and the El Mirage dry lake bed in southern California.

Wendover, Utah – Greenspeed will be attending Speed Week 2013 (August 10-16) at the Bonneville Salt Flats just across the border from Wendover, Nevada. After a few broken records and a few broken engines, this year they intend to conquer their ultimate goal: break the petro diesel record for pickups using vegetable oil as a fuel.

The students involved in Greenspeed are driven to succeed. Currently the club consists of six engineering students from various disciplines. With such a small team, each student is responsible for many key tasks. They each develop skills that can never be taught in a classroom. The students in Greenspeed will be very valuable team players and leaders after graduation.

Greenspeed’s mission is simple: raise aweness of renewable energy sources. So far, this mission has been accomplished through the use of these energy sources in high-profile motorsports. More avenues are currently in the works. The team has shown the car at the Washington DC Auto Show and SEMA, at both events their efforts were validated by the interest generated from the project. Interacting with the public in a one-on-one environment has shown how much interest there is in these technologies.

The team has received the “Trailblazer Award” from the President of Boise State University, Dr. Bob Kustra for their efforts.

“In the classroom, we teach the basics and give the students what they need to implement engineering solutions. This project is giving them the opportunity to take that technical knowledge and combine it with leadership, managment, presentation skills, and just plain hard work to achieve a difficult task over a long period of time. I can’t imagine better preparation for the real world”, John Gardner, PhD., Boise State University

Greenspeed is a student club that was founded in 2010 by Dave Schenker (Junior, Mechanical Engineering). The team was joined shortly after by Patrick Johnston (Senior, Mechanical Engineering) who was quickly elected Vice President by his team mates. Their cohorts are:

Mike Van Kirk (Sophomore, Mechanical Engineering, Treasurer)

Jenny Kniss (Junior, Computer Science)

Adrian Rothenbühler (graduated, Electrical Engineer)

Wes Butler (Sophomore, Electrical Engineering)
