ATLANTA - Aug. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- The words say it all…

“I probably would have had a stroke by now and could have died. My blood pressure was sky high. I’m now on medication to control my blood pressure and I’m eating better and walking. CHAMPS saved my life.” Ralph, 51 years old

“This is a good awareness arrangement that could save a person’s life. It should be continued with vigilance. Thank you!” Carl, 47 years old.

“I come back to CHAMPS every year for my annual physical because this is where I’m most comfortable. Thank you all for what you do for the community.” Buddy, 52 years old.

These are just a sample of the powerful words from men who have attended past events hosted by the Community Health and Men’s Promotion Summit (CHAMPS).  As the case is  every year, CHAMPS is planning for another successful, crucial community event and continues to work address men’s health disparities, particularly, the underserved.

Metro Atlanta men can learn to improve their health by attending the Annual Community Health and Men’s Promotion Summit (CHAMPS) on Saturday, September 7, 2013. CHAMPS will provide men with a variety of free health screenings ranging from prostate cancer to diabetes to cholesterol. It will be held at the Georgia World Congress Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Building A Room 411/412. Men will receive free screenings for prostate and colorectal cancer, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, vision and dental. Physicians and other health professionals will also check cholesterol levels and assess risks for heart problems. There will also be informational exhibits, educational seminars, physician consultations.

CHAMPS is designed to encourage men-who traditionally do not make regular health maintenance a priority-to address their health needs and make healthy lifestyle choices. “Although men are living longer today than they did in the previous century, many are still dying prematurely from preventable and treatable illnesses at an average age six years earlier than women,” said Dr. James Bennett of Midtown Urology, and one of the founders of CHAMPS. Last year, CHAMPS provided health screenings for more than 500 men from the metro Atlanta area. CHAMPS has become an invaluable resource to the community especially in the wake of the recent controversy surrounding prostate cancer screening.

CHAMPS is a collaborative project with a consortium of private and public entities interested in addressing men's health concerns by raising awareness of the importance of early detection and disease treatment. These include the Fulton-Dekalb Hospital Authority; Abbvie Pharmaceuticals; Emory Healthcare; Atlanta Medical Association; City of Atlanta; Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition; Midtown Urology; Midtown Urology Health & Education Foundation, and many more.

The presenting sponsors for this year's CHAMPS are Fulton-Dekalb Hospital Authority and Abbvie Pharmaceuticals.  Additional sponsors include QDX Pathology, American Medical Systems, Slate Pharmaceuticals,

Please contact CHAMPS at 404-881-0966 ext. 117 or champs.health@gmail.com with any questions on how you can become a part of this motivating event, registration, or sponsorship.

You can also register as an exhibitor, provider/screener,  or volunteer for the event on our website at www.champsga.org.

About CHAMPS

The organization’s goal is to encourage men to make healthy lifestyle choices, as well as, address their healthcare needs. It exists to help eradicate lines that enable health disparities in this world to exist. Although it is a lofty goal they believe by providing this safety net it can pursue their mission on all fronts: education, awareness, and prevention. Their initial and primary focus is Georgia, a state that ranks 9th in Prostate Cancer death*, with plans to expand operations to other states.
