Should I buy a martial arts franchise or just wing it myself?

Starting a martial arts school, dojo or martial arts academy is a lot of hard work and requires allot of time and effort. You may not want to try it on your own. Maybe a better option is a franchise that's taken care of all of the guess work.

MANHATTAN, N.Y. - July 29, 2013 - PRLog -- For some time now you’ve been taking martial arts classes at your community karate or kung fu school. This has allowed you to build the confidence and self-esteem you needed through middle and high school. The other kids picked at you so you didn’t try out for football or basketball. Your parents thought it best for you to learn how to take care of yourself so they paid for you to take those classes. Over time you progressed through ranks and now hold the rank of black belt. Your sensei or sifu trust you with teaching the class and other classes, they fully understand the struggles you’ve faced with and have been there for you all along the way. In fact you really look up to your sifu or sensei because of that very reason. They, he, she or her are your hero. Now you want to be like them.

So you’ve been contemplating starting your own school; you’ve even taken business classes at the community college. You’ve come up with your short list from what you’ve learned from the business college of what you need to do:

·         - Find a location

·         - Prepare a business plan

·         - Assess the market

·         - Determine your target market

·    - And determine how you are going to fund your project

You’ve even gone as far as asking your sifu/sensei for guidance and direction. Not all school owners have the available finances to help there gold star student in achieving his or her dream of owning their own martial arts studio.

But they are wealth of knowledge on how they go started and what it will take to sustain the school during hard times. It’s a different ball game from 20-30 years ago when opening up your dojo, martial arts school or martial arts academy. National Market Research – for Martial Arts states the Target market is usually kid’s ages 4 - 14 years old and adults. This accounts for 70 - 80% of the people studying in Martial Arts today!

This means as a new school owner you have to compete with industries soliciting for that market. Just imagine your competition: baseball, basketball, football, dance, gymnastics, recreation centers, YMCA, and gyms just to name a few. Franchises in order to be successful know and understand the space in which they compete for business. You may be reluctant to purchase a martial arts franchise because it’s such a specialized niche market and the percentage of the population interested is around 5% but if you are seriously interested in owning your own successful martial arts school it may take you longer to grow your customer base than the expertise, guidance and direction of a team that fully understands the market and the martial arts industry. That way you can focus totally on the business and or teaching.

Opening a martial arts school is easy but opening and running a successful martial arts school is a lot of hard work and although you may love martial arts and want to make a living doing it, it’s no easy challenge.
