Two local business women incorporated helping others as part of their business plan by donating $2,000 to Atlantic City Rescue Mission. "We want to give back to the community as a way of thanking all the people who have helped encouraged and supported us in starting this business," said Michelle Torres Uriel Malizia, co-owners of Empanada Mammas

A humble beginning, Empanada Mammas began in the kitchen homes of Michelle Torres and Uriel Malizia.  The Empanada is a traditional staple of Argentina but Michelle added her own New Jersey twist. The result was amazing.

With some prodding from their two husbands and other family friends they were encouraged to try selling them commercially. "We began with the idea that we would try it out through the local summer venues like Bayfest in Somers Point NJ.  Then If the interest was positive we would offer them up as a catering service." said Uriel Malizia

Then these life-long friends, together with their spouses and kids began to sell their Empanadas at area events and festivals along the Jersey coast as well as made-to-order catering. The two women have been setting aside a portion of every sale ever since to be donated to charity.

On Friday, July 26, 2013 they made their first check presentation to Atlantic City Rescue Mission for $2000.  In addition their business Empanada Mamma's, has been working with the ACRM Work Readiness Program as a food preparation experience.

The reception has been amazing. So much so, these two women are thinking about the possibility of a storefront. But for now, you can only experience them by hiring them to cater your next event or by attending one of the many South Jersey Summer festivals. Check Empanada Mammas out on their Facebook page or website to see where they will be appearing next.

Receiving the check on behalf the Mission was Pastor Bill Warner, Director of Men's Ministries: "These young ladies weren't kidding. I just tried one of the Empanadas they made for the Mission and I'll be going back for seconds! At some point the Mission will assist nearly 3,000 individuals over the course of the year. We simply couldn't do it with our volunteers, donors and help from the business community," said Mr. Warner.
