“The pain of juvenile arthritis can persist for years, or last just a few weeks,” said Dan Friedman, vice president of The Hot Tub Store.  “Sometimes the symptoms come and go over the course of their entire life.  There are several things parents can do however to help children feel better about themselves and help provide relief from the pain at home,” continued Friedman.  

Here are three things parents can do to help their children cope with arthritis:

Treat Them The Same - If there are more children in the family, make sure that they all feel equal and the child with juvenile arthritis doesn’t feel singled out. It can begin quite innocently. Wanting to make the child with arthritis feel more comfortable, and avoid painful situations. However, too much coddling can lead to isolation when other siblings have chores to do or go out and play games.

Always make sure that the child you are protecting has the same amount of chores, as long as they are geared toward their abilities. Find activities that child can do, hopefully ones that the whole family can join in so they feel a part of the things the family does.

Understand Their Confusion and Anger - It is not fair that one child should have to suffer with an illness that is not caused by something they did and others do not. The feeling of anger and confusion caused by thinking it was something they did, or anger that they have an illness the other kids they know do not, is common. Be there for them, and understand that anger.

Don’t negate their feelings - It is completely normal and understandable to feel the way they do. Let them be angry. Try to help them see past the emotional pain to how things can be better with a positive attitude, but listen to their feelings and frustration with the disease.

Provide Home-Based Therapies - There are plenty of therapies for juvenile arthritis. Many of them require a clinical setting, however, there are certain therapies that can be provided in a home that are wonderful for relieving the pain of juvenile arthritis. One of those is hydrotherapy with a hot tub.

Water therapy is great, but a hot tub goes a step further. A simple swimming pool can provide the buoyancy that takes the weight off of joints, and can provide a platform for stress-free exercise.
