TORONTO - July 26, 2013 - PRLog -- Toronto, ON (Friday, July 26, 2013) – A group of 7 volunteer youth from North America will document the press conference regarding the Canadian precedent-setting ruling that will allow a trial in Canada against Hudbay Minerals for shootings, murder, and gang-rape at its former mine in Guatemala. The press conference will take place in Guatemala City on Sunday, July 28th at 8:30 p.m.

The group of youth is part of a program run by the non-profit organization called Operation Groundswell (OG). For the past two years, the organization has been working with the community of El Estor in Guatemala to support community-requested projects including the building of a structure to house community council meetings. Through fundraising and a partnership with the Rights Action Solidarity network, OG and its volunteers have stood in solidarity in the community’s struggle for justice.

The claims of 13 Mayan Guatemalans from this small community will proceed to trial in Canadian courts. A ruling with national and international implications, it will be the first time a Canadian corporation can be held legally responsible for harms inflicted on their subsidiaries. OG’s volunteers have rerouted their trip so they can bear witness to this history.
