Italian Artist Collective Antonello Ghezzi to Create a Never Ending Night

July 25, 2013 - PRLog -- Bologna based artist collective, Antonello Ghezzi, is creating a Never Ending Night, a system of cameras located in the world’s most remote places capturing the stars and streaming them live, anywhere, anytime in an immersive experience to people around the globe.

“What if we could run after the night to make it last infinitely?  We see ourselves often searching this way for a dream of something that makes us hope that things might be different.  So we decided to create a Never Ending Night.  At any time of day or any place, someone at two different parts of the world can be looking at the same starry sky, transmitted directly from locations worldwide.  We want to make everyone feel that they are part of one sky, without social divisions or political boundaries.”

They have the support of some of the finest scientific organizations and observatories around the world.  The Italian National Research Council (CNR) has partnered with the artists to put cameras in their Arctic Dirigibile base, the Antarctic Concordia base and Pyramide in the Himalayas. The National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) has further agreed to help purchase one of the cameras.  In addition they have international partnerships with the European South Observatory, the European Northern Observatory, the MMT Observatory at the University of Arizona, the McDonald Observatory at the University of Texas, the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the South African Astronomical Observatory, just to highlight a few.

Currently they are raising funds to realize the project.  On Monday, July 15 they launched a campaign (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/never-ending-night/x/17...) on IndieGoGo, the international site dedicated to crowdfunding.  Their goal is to raise $5,000 in 40 days by August 24.  The amount will cover the cost purchasing a low-light camera and developing their prototype, which will be sent to the Arctic base Dirigibile by CNR in September.

“The true value of this project is to bring the discovery of wonder of the dark sky to everyone (especially children),” remarked Patrizia Caraveo, director of INAF.

“It is a treasure that modern civilization tends to lose because of all the lights we turn on every night.”
