Narcissistic personality disorder is a serious global issue, which I believe is much more predominant than statistics indicate. Many people believe narcissistic individuals are those who have an inflated ego. The truth is in fact far more sinister.

People with narcissistic personality disorder have a severely damaged, insecure and pathologically malicious inner self. The narcissistic individual needs people to grant him or her attention like a drug addicts requires heroin to emotionally survive. Gaining this attention, known as ‘narcissistic supply, is the narcissistic behaviour the narcissist employs to try to avoid the intensely painful feelings of emotional self-annihilation that he or she exists with every day.

The only way for the narcissist to avoid his or her emotions temporarily is to gain attention (good or bad), accolades, notoriety, significance or possessions to feed the narcissist’s ego in any way that facilitates escaping for the inner demons of feeling unworthy, defective and unlovable.

Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder create widespread damage and destruction, as well as emotional, mental, physical, financial and spiritual abuse within families, intimate partner relationships, friendships and workplaces.

If a person has had the unfortunate experience of being narcissistically abused, they feel like they have become ‘an empty shell barely existing’. Narcissistic abuse victims suffer from obsessive thoughts, severe anxiety disorders and may feel like their will and joy for life has been literally sucked out of them. It is also common to feel intensely addicted to the narcissistic personality, against all logic, even after all the pathological, adulterous and abusive evidence of this person has been exposed.
