Mercy Regional Cancer Center Earns Prestigious Accreditation

REDDING, Calif. - July 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Mercy Regional Cancer Center, a partner of Redding Radiation Oncologists, P.C., announces today it earned the prestigious American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) Accreditation in Radiation Oncology. The accolade is provided after rigorous, impartial peer reviews of the facility, including patient care, safety practices and technology calibration.

Accreditation is a voluntary process in which professional peers identify standards indicative of a quality practice, and an audit is conducted to assure that these standards are followed.

“We are proud to earn this accreditation based on our high standards of care,” saysMatthew Allen, M.D., Board Certified Radiation Oncologist with Mercy Regional Cancer Center. “The accreditation serves as a testament to our goal of providing the best care for our patients, while maintaining and exceeding the national benchmarks set by our peers.”

To receive the distinction, a cancer treatment center is assessed over the course of several months through visits to the facility and evaluations of staffing, equipment and treatment records. Only those who meet strict criteria receive the accreditation.

“Our patients are our top priority and it is our duty to provide them the best care possible,” says Sivasubramania R. Manoharan, Ph.D., physicist with Mercy Regional Cancer Center. “This accreditation shows that we are committed to go above and beyond to care for every person who walks through our doors.”

During the review process, Mercy Regional Cancer Center was judged on the following:

·       Accuracy in patients' charts, including medical information, quality of documentation and case management

·       Calibration of all machines and radiation safety measures

·       Radiation therapists-to-patient ratio to ensure proper patient safety

·       Review of all processes and work flow within the facility including:

o   Radiation Safety Program: Ensures quality check for physicists and safety measurements for equipment

o   Quality Assurance and Improvement Program: Confirms the facility is continuously updating all measures for improvement and education

o   Peer-to-Peer Review Program: Certifies every treatment plan is reviewed by every physician to maintain proper standard of treatment and management

As part of its mission, ACRO developed a practice accreditation program in 1995, consisting of practice standards for radiation oncology.

Mercy Regional Cancer Center will have the accreditation for three years, during which they will be subject to random evaluations to ensure the high standards of care are still being met.
