Phil's BBQ and the San Diego Padres Named MLB's Stadium Food King

SAN DIEGO - July 19, 2013 - PRLog -- SAN DIEGO, CA – Phil’s BBQ and the San Diego Padres were voted as the best ballpark food nationwide. USA Today Sports launched a social media challenge on July 9, where eight Major League Baseball teams and their best dish faced off for the title of Stadium Food King Challenge. Three rounds later, Phil’s BBQ and the Padres were named Stadium Food King for the El Toro tri-tip sandwich.

         “Anytime you can beat out a great BBQ state like Kansas, it’s a good day,” said Phil’s BBQ owner, Phil Pace. “Being located inside the ballpark has been a lot of fun for our BBQrew, and we look forward to serving many more fans at Petco.”

USA Today took open submissions beginning on July 1, then selected eight finalists including four American League teams (Mariners, Orioles, Royals, Indians) and four National League teams (Diamondbacks, Padres, Brewers, Mets) to go head-to-head beginning July 9. Phil’s BBQ defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks and their Sonoran Dog in the first round, the Milwaukee Brewers’ pulled pork parfait in round two, and then took home the crown by defeating the Kansas City Royals’ Cheesy Corn Brisket-acho 55% to 45% in the final round.

“San Diegans know Phil’s BBQ is some of the best ballpark food you can find, so it’s great to see Phil’s receive the national recognition it deserves,” said Padres Vice President, Concessions & Retail Scott Marshall. “The Padres are committed to showcasing the best food San Diego has to offer, and having Phil’s in the ballpark this season has been a fantastic addition to our concessions lineup.”

         The Stadium Food King Challenge was not the first time Phil’s tri-tip has received national attention. The El Toro was named the West Coast Champion of Adam Richman’s Travel Channel show, “Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America” in spring 2012. Phil’s BBQ will continue to expand its national exposure as it opens inside the San Diego International Airport on August 13. Phil’s BBQ was selected to join the line-up of new eateries at the airport in order to help create a more uniquely San Diego feel, and will serve a variety of their popular menu items including the El Toro sandwich, Broham pulled pork sandwich, pork ribs, chicken and onion rings .
