Follow on Google News | 7 Design Tips For New Tankers from a Veteran Firefighter.By: Fyrtrks Determine the roll this new tanker will play in your operation. Will this unit just haul water, or will it need a pump. Once that is done you can start to design your new unit.. Research all of your options of tankers. Size does matter, but so does reliability. Communicate your desires for you expectations to your prospective manufacturers. Make sure they understand what you want. Ask for specific drawings and photographs on how your tank’s dump system will be designed. Some tank designs can occlude 50% or more of the dump valve. Assure your fill system uses either long sweep 90 or 45 degree bends. As is always the case friction loss is your enemy. Have the manufacturer terminate the fill line at the top of the tank. The water won’t be under it’s own pressure when the tank is nearing the top. Design a venting system that is as large as possible. Ben Stock from A.H. Stock manufacturing says; “We shoot for an 80% ratio of vent size to dump valve size.” About the Author: Daniel Jenkins a firefighter- End
