Follow on Google News | Mercedes-Benz Announces New Active Multibeam LED Headlights for 2014New technology should improve automotive lighting with more adaptability and better efficiency.
By: Motor Werks of Barrington The new S-Class will be the first modern production vehicle that will lack light bulbs completely. Instead, all lighting will be accomplished by high-efficiency LEDs. Even the interior ambient lighting will be achieved with hundreds of LEDs, which can provide a wide array of different lighting moods and settings. The Active Multibeam headlights will be equipped with not only hundreds of LEDS, but also a camera. The system will use the camera to calculate optimum light distribution hundreds of times per second. Since every single LED can be switched on or off, or even adjust brightness, the system can provide adaptive lighting, even going so far as varying lighting from the right to the left lamp. This can help prevent blinding other drivers with high beams, and can actually help drivers see better around dark corners. Thomas Weber, the head of Development at Mercedes-Benz, said, "With Active Multibeam LED, the headlamps are able to react even more quickly and individually to changing traffic conditions. On top of this there are extended functions of which a driver will become directly aware, such as anticipatory cornering detection in the case of the active light function." The new lighting technology should also have the marginal benefit of contributing to efficiency. Even an array of LEDs should use less energy than a few large xenon or halogen bulbs, which will take a load off of the electrical system. At Motor Werks of Barrington, the S-Class and CLS-Class should arrive later this year. Motor Werks of Barrington has the latest vehicles from Mercedes-Benz on hand at 1475 S. Barrington Rd.
