Going To Work In The Oil Industry for a Summer Job? Think Again

Fictionalized account of life on the rigs shows the darker side of the industry's fast money.
EDMONTON, Alberta - July 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Edmonton, AB- Most college students looking for work are looking for one of three things:

1) as much money as possible

2) valuable future job experience

3) somewhere close to home or school

Marc Bauer, bestselling author of "Alternative Energy," suggests students look only for points 2 and 3.

"I know having money is good, especially when you are at school and have big bills. But don't look just for money. I've been there--I know it's tempting. The oil industry, the one I know best, can offer big, big money. When I was looking for work out of high school, I wanted out of my small town. And--to be fair--the oil industry offered me a way out of that. And they pay well.

But they don't pay enough attention to safety; they are so rich, they really don't have to care. My father was killed in an oil rig accident and I have seen lives ruined by working in the field. The hours are too long, the OT pay too tempting to turn down.”

Marc suggests that before you fill out an application to work in the oil industry to ask yourself or your sons and daughters heading into the field a few questions:

Are your ready to work long, long hours? 18 hr shifts are not uncommon.
Do you understand that safety is an issue on the job? Tired workers are sloppy workers. And everyone is tired after weeks and weeks of no time off.
Do you value time with your friends and family?  This type of job takes you away from them for long stretches, and you may end up a stranger to them. Take that into consideration if you are a new relationship of any kind.

Think it through before you apply. Even the Alberta government* says 8 people died in Alberta last year from accidents on the rigs. Are you sure that's where you want to spend YOUR summer?
