FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Charlottetown, PE, Canada – July 10th, 2013–Island Abbey Foods Ltd.™, a PEI based natural health product and specialty food producer, has announced today the donation of 670,000 of their newest product innovation, Honibe® Honey Delights®, to Canada’s Food Banks across the nation. This donation will support close to 900,000 Canadians that are affected by hunger each month.

“We are very honored to be able to provide this level of a donation to our nation’s food banks as we are aware of the growing need to support our nation in this manner.” stated John Rowe, CEO of Island Abbey Foods Ltd., “The mantra of the Five Hole For Food and Food Banks Canada are ones that we are aligned with at Honibe and support very passionately. We hope that this donation will help Food Banks Canada, if only in a small way, to better serve the needs of Canadians of all ages across the nation.”

Honibe Honey Delights are made with 100% pure honey and are only 10 calories per 2.6 gram piece and contain honey’s natural properties. Other honey product lines on the market only contain a small percentage of honey (typically less than 5%) and are made from refined sugar. The Honibe Honey For Health line of products are 100% all natural and a healthier alternative to refined sugar products. Honey is proven to contain anti-bacterial & anti-microbial properties, as well as, anti-oxidants and nutrients (Arbor Nutrition, 2009). Honey is also an alternative for Diabetics and for people on low or restricted carbohydrate diets as honey is rated lower on the glycemic index than refined sugars: glucose = 100, sucrose = 68, honey =55 (Arbor Nutrition, 2009). Honey has also been proven as a healthier option for adults and children compared to DM based cough syrups (Penn State College of Medicine, Paul, 2007).

The Honibe – Pure Honey Joy brand has seen a great deal of nationwide support since their first product, the Honey Drop®, was introduced in 2008, including multiple product awards from across Canada. Honibe’s recognition started to grow internationally when it won the most prestigious food award in the world at SIAL Paris 2010, the Global SIAL d’Or (Gold Medal), which recognized the Honibe Honey Drop as “The Best New Food Product in the World”. Using the same proprietary technology as the award winning Honey Drop, the Honibe product line has since expanded to include Honey Delights® candies and suckers / lollipops, Honey Sprinkles™ for cooking and baking, and Honey Lozenges™ for coughs and colds. Honibe was subsequently honoured with the “Canada Brand Business Award” at SIAL Toronto in 2011. Honibe was also featured on one of Canada’s most popular television shows, CBC’s Dragons’ Den, where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to savvy business investors. The Dragons smelled money in the honey pot as Honibe was offered one of the largest deals in the shows history. In August 2012, the Canadian Space Agency selected the Honibe Honey Drop as one of its ‘Snacks For Space’ and the Honey Drop went to the International Space Station with Canadian Commander Chris Hadfield’s December 2012 mission. Most recently, Island Abbey Foods was named one of Progress Magazines Fastest Growing Companies in 2012.
