Peters Elworthy & Moore takes their canoes out for charity

July 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Saturday 29 June saw teams of Cambridge-based accountants firm Peters Elworthy & Moore (PEM) take part in a canoe challenge, travelling from Cambridge to Ely and back, in aid of the Rosie Hospital – PEM’s nominated Charity of the Year.

The teams took between 11 and 13 hours to complete the challenge, covering a total of 35 miles. All teams arrived at the finish line feeling exhausted – and a little sunburnt! With three locks on the way from Cambridge to Ely, 18 staff members who took part not only had to canoe through the heat, but also had to get in and out of the boats and carry them around the locks. Other members of staff cheered them on from the side lines and were there to greet them at the finish.

Says Sean McCann, PEM accountant, “It was certainly an adventure – I was personally attacked by a swan, which led to our canoe capsizing! It was a hot day and everyone found it really tough, but it was also a lot of fun and everyone was glad to have taken part for a good cause”.

As part of PEM’s on-going commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, the Rosie Hospital was nominated by staff as the firm’s chosen Charity of the Year for 2012/13.

The Rosie Maternity Hospital looks after low- and high-risk patients from throughout the East of England. It is one of only three ‘level three’ designated neonatal units in the region – caring for newborn babies with complex medical problems and those who require surgery.

Following a variety of fundraising activities, PEM has raised around £15,000 to date and is hoping to reach a target of £35,000 – the price of one incubator for the neonatal department of the Rosie Hospital.
