Summer is here! It’s time to enjoy the great outdoors, picnics, fun and family gatherings at the cottage. To ensure you have a wonderful time, play it safe and remember these few tips.
If you are headed to the beach or cottage, or just visiting friends in their backyard make sure you have sun protection. Take plenty of sunscreen, a floppy hat, ultra violet resistant clothing, and sunglasses. Reapply your sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours to stay protected.
Too much sun, heat, and activity can result in heat exhaustion. If you are feeling weak, dizzy, vomiting, have heart palpitations, sweating excessively, and feeling numbness you may be experiencing heat exhaustion. Drink lots of fluids, sit in the shade, don’t overexert yourself to prevent heat exhaustion.
Sunglasses not only help prevent eye cancer, cataracts, and blindness-they make a great fashion accessory! Chose good sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection.
Chose a sunscreen of SPF (sun protection factor) 15 or higher to protect your skin. SPF 15 means you can stay out in the sun 15 times longer than someone with no sunscreen on. Always chose a higher level SPF if you have fair skin, or burn easily, or sit in the shade to avoid burning. FI you use bug repellents-which are also strongly suggested, increase your SPF rating as they reduce the effectiveness of sunscreens.
Eating outside is so pleasant in the summer-until the ants join the party. Orange oil, mint oil or leaves spread around the picnic area will deter the little fellows as will a line of chalk or talc powder. Enjoy your picnic without the uninvited guests!
