Follow on Google News | Kensington Mint Releases New Nelson Mandela Commemorative BanknoteBy: Kensington Mint The new banknote features various images of the anti-apartheid leader, who remains a rare unifying force in a country still scarred by its racially divided past. The Mint revealed the new note earlier this year on the eve of the 23rd anniversary of Mandela's release from prison where he served 27 years for his opposition to white-minority rule and suppression of black citizens rights. The 94-year-old, who became South Africa's first black president in 1994, has rarely appeared in public over the last 12 months due to ongoing chronic health issues but is still revered both at home and abroad and held up as a symbol of freedom, human rights and democracy by many. "Nelson Mandela represents something special not just in South Africa but to the world" a Mint spokesman commented, "We designed this banknote to celebrate the lifetime achievements of a true global icon, unaware that shortly after its completion he would be facing the critical life threatening condition he is currently experiencing in a Pretoria hospital for which we pray he will recover". The limited edition banknote can be found at various outlets online such as ebay, amazon or direct from the mint itself. End
