Follow on Google News | Uttarakhand tragedy was avoidableBy: Dhyan Foundation Rapacious greed and cavalier approach to blame New Delhi, 4th July, 2013: The recent tragedy in Uttarakhand is getting grimmer by the day with the number of dead and missing rising by the day. To make matters worse twenty heroic members of the armed forces lost their lives in a horrific chopper crash while on a rescue mission. At a time like this it is natural to wonder what God is up to. However horrific and sad the above incidents may be, didn’t everybody know that this was an ecologically fragile zone, and could take only so many people? What is this business of allowing unscrupulous builders and tourism industry people free access to river banks and fragile mountain sides to build their hotels on? Isn’t this holy and revered land which has been revered for millennia? Then why desecrate these mountains, rivers and holy shrines by sucking them all into the vortex of a rapacious tourism industry. The extraordinary amount of rainfall is symptomatic of global warming which may have been a result of the actions of the whole world, but the sending of enormous numbers of unsuspecting tourists to a place that is fragile and not meant to cater to this deluge of humanity is something for which there needs to be accountability. God did not make this tragedy occur; human greed deed. Says, Yogi Ashwini, the leading light of Dhyan Foundation, “The majority of people going to Dhams don't go there asking for moksha or for penance. They go there for a picnic, a family outing and in the process temples are visited and more wealth and health is asked for. Never have they bothered to feed a hungry human or animal on the road. We have polluted the Ganga and our water bodies are now poison; trillion of tons of effluence goes into our sacred rivers. Extreme negative karma is created when this water poisons the animals, humans and plants which it touches. For instance there is this blatant disregard for the cow slaughter ban, which results in thousands of Nandis(Lord Shiva’s favourite animal and faithful companion) being mercilessly slaughtered for commercial gain. This when Lord Shiva had granted a boon to Nandi, whatever is whispered into your ears will be heard by me.” Unbridled religious tourism designed to fill the coffers of a few needs to be regulated and brought down to reasonable levels. The indiscriminate damming of rivers and the mining of river beds has to be stopped altogether. Only then will we begin to move in the direction of restoring the sanctity of the place and avoiding more such disasters.
