The funding will allow for continued comprehensive services to 388 infants and toddlers in Early Head Start (birth to age three), plus 2,283 preschool children in Head Start (ages four and five) in Clark, Madison, and Montgomery Counties. The number of preschool children to be served is slightly reduced as a result of sequestration. MVCDC was required to implement a 5.27% reduction effective July 1, 2013. “The continuation of this program is great news for children and parents in our three-county jurisdiction. So many families depend on Head Start program services to help prepare their children for success in school,” said Mary Burns, MVCDC CEO. The Head Start preschool population annual award totals $18,751,842, including funds for training. Early Head Start program funding, with training, is $4,127,939 annually. MVCDC administers educational preschool services in centers offering part-day, double, single, and full-day sessions, plus home-based services. Services for infants and toddlers are provided in full day centers and through the home-based program. Additionally, the agency contracts with a number of private childcare centers and family daycare homes that serve children in their centers. MVCDC contracts with three community agencies to provide Early Head Start home visiting services. The agency began providing comprehensive Head Start services to low income children ages three to five years in 1965. Today, Miami Valley Child Development Centers, Inc. is funded to serve 2,283 children ages 3-5 years and 388 children ages 0-3 in Clark, Madison, and Montgomery Counties, Ohio. Funding is provided through the US Department of Health and Human Services; Administration for Children and Families; and the Ohio Department of Education, Division of Early Childhood Education. Head Start’s long history of comprehensive services to children and families has been shown to positively impact some of the neediest children in the nation. The program prepares children ages zero to five for success in Kindergarten and beyond. Each child is assessed at the beginning of the school year and periodically throughout the year. Results are regularly reviewed and tabulated to determine each child’s progress and what is required to assist in their continued development. The program targets most of its services toward families of low income.
