Follow on Google News | Is Hand Writing Still Important in the Modern Day?One of the most obvious and perhaps significant changes that has come from the analogue to digital changeover is the switch from hand writing to typing.
By: Yudle In the years gone by people would carry a pad and pen to jot down their notes; nowadays it is a lot easier and quicker to put your event into your smart phone or tablet and get a notification to remind you at a time of your choosing, helping to cope with the frantic pace of day to day life. There is no doubt that typing is a lot faster than cursive or hand writing, but does the lack of writing by hand hinder us and our children when it comes to picking up and learning languages and alphabets. Schools in recent years have seen a transformation in the way they teach, teachers have moved from blackboards and white chalk to interactive whiteboards in which they can type any notes they have for the students to copy down onto their own laptops or tablets. So the question that must be asked is whether hand writing is still an important skill set to learn in modern day? The answer would seem to be a resounding yes. Experts from all over the world seem to be in agreement that writing can greatly enhance your ability to learn the alphabet by being able to visualise the letters through the movement of your hand. A study conducted by the University of Indiana, had one group of children hand writing A, B and C, whilst the other group were using a keyboard to print the letters on the screen. The Children then entered an MRI machine disguised as a space ship and were once again shown the letters. The group who had written the letters were able to remember the letters easier than those who had typed them, furthermore the neural activity from the children who had written the letter resembled that of an adult much more than that of the second group. It seems that companies who create tablets and smart phones have also become aware of the importance of hand writing as numerous amount of apps have become available that allow you to write using your finger or instrument on the touch screen, hoping to help encourage the use of hand writing rather than just typing. So by the looks of things the pen is still going strong and is a vital tool in a person’s learning process and hand writing is still an important skill set to have.
