Rabbi Shlomo Braun attends Wedding, with a mixture of Anglo-Jewish customs.

It's my community, where I spent my latest 50 years living and working among the country's most concentrated population of observant Jews.

NEW YORK - July 2, 2013 - PRLog -- Rabbi Shlomo Braun recently attended his daughter-in-law, Yitty Becher’s sister’s wedding, at the Renaissance. The Bride, Toby Becher got married to Yoel Weiss, manager of a Chinese kosher cosine Restaurant in Brooklyn. At the wedding, their families and communities were alive with exotic foods, lively dancing and exciting Jewish music.

The definition of Anglo-Jewish has become looser in recent decades. It can now denote any mixed Jewish-American parentage, but for many its primary meaning refers to people of longstanding mixed lineage of our rich Jewish heritage dating back hundreds of years into the past.

"Previously, the community was too Anglicized - clinging to Modern Orthodox, Chasidic or Litvish traditions and customs," explains Rabbi Braun, of the Aleh Foundation. "But today it's clearly visible that they are much more integrated into society in customs, language, clothing, social interactions, etc. Many Orthodox Jews today can easily mingle with any observant Jewish lifestyle:"

It's a significant turnaround for the community in New York, which rarely married a different sect of Judaism. But today their job prospects are rosier, as - they are well equipped for multinational customer service positions and speak English fluently.

There are many who want to preserve the Anglo-Jewish identity in New York. It has been noted in recent years that the number of Anglo-Jews who have succeeded in certain fields is remarkably disproportionate to the community's size. For example, in the music industry there are Abraham Fried, Mordechai Ben David, Lipe Schmeltzer, Carlbach, and more.

Another illustration of the Jewish community integration is the attached photo, where you see four fathers of which each of their sons married one of the four daughters of Raizel Becher. The person on the left is Nassau County Police Detective Maurice Baran, next to him is Ted Lachman CPA from Flatbush, next is Shmuel Zvi Weiss a Talmudic Scholar from Boro park, and on the right is Rabbi Shlomo Braun an active community and political leader.

Rabbi Shlomo Braun championed in overseeing the success of the Aleh Foundation, which represents many centers in Israel to promote the advancement and rehabilitation of severely disabled children for the past 30 years.  The Aleh Foundation is located on 5317 13th Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11219.  Please call 800-317-ALEH for more information or, visit our website at www.alehfoundationusa.org
