XBox One vs. PS4 - A Console Comparison

June 30, 2013 - PRLog -- Many people may be wondering who will win the console wars this year when the Xbox One and the PS4 are released. The thing is it is still hard to tell. The predecessors to these consoles, the Xbox 360 and PS3 sold equally well worldwide and proved that one is just as formidable as the other is. In this article, however, we will take a look at hardware and software features and make an educated guess as to which console will most likely come out on top.

Now if you buy your console mainly for its exclusive titles then your decision may be fairly easy. Fanboys of Xbox-exclusive titles will continue to support Microsoft while fanboys of Playstation-exclusive titles will continue to support Sony. If you are basing your decision on price alone then the PS4 is $100 cheaper at $400. However, if you are a discerning buyer who prefers to look at multiple aspects such as software, hardware, and usage policies, then the decision becomes much more complex.

As speculated, both consoles are very similar in terms of hardware. The CPUs are virtually identical and the graphics is a derivative of the Radeon 7000 series. However, based on estimations made throughout computer communities across the web, the PS4 is considerably more capable at pumping out high-quality graphics. How significant this additional horsepower will be is dependent upon game engines and game developers too. On the software and policy side of things, the Xbox One and PS4 were initially very different. Most gamers would have swayed from the Xbox in favor of the PS4s less stringent and more gamer-friendly game sharing and playing policies. Microsoft required that you  have been on the internet within the past 24 hours in order to play on your console and that game-sharing would be restricted completely. The Xbox One requires the Kinect unit as well, leaving many people second-guessing their privacy.

From Microsoft’s mouth, we know that the Xbox One (formerly known as the Xbox 720) boasts an 8-core AMD CPU with 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a 500GB hard drive, HDMI in/out, USB 3.0, and Gigabit Ethernet. Further data suggests that the GPU is on par with the current Radeon HD 7790.

The PS4, in comparison, has an 8-core Jaguar AMD CPU as well, with a GPU that’s very similar to the Radeon 7870, which is significantly more powerful than the 7790. The PS4 has 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, which provides considerably more bandwidth allowing for more information and therefore greater graphics processing power.

Connectivity-wise, the Xbox One definitely has more sockets, particularly an HDMI-in port which the PS4 lacks. All this really means is that the PS4 cannot be used as a media center in ways that the Xbox can. In terms of interactivity with the console it becomes a bit more difficult to compare the Kinect with the Playstation 4’s Eye, however it seems that Microsoft is aiming to rely on voice and gesture controls for controlling the console’s interface as opposed to gamepads on the PS4.

Finally, the last piece of hardware that we can compare between the Xbox One and PS4 is the gamepad. The PS4’s dualshock controller is highly impressive. With built-in movement tracking, a built-in speaker, and a multi-touch touchpad, this is one advanced controller. The Xbox One gamepad, in comparison, is basically just a refined version of the previous iteration—more ergonomic and better feedback. It will be up to gamers to decide which console feels better to the touch and will provide long-lasting comfort throughout hours of constant gameplay.
