Be A Fit Mama, RYSE Community Org Join Forces to Create Girls Fitness Program, Target Youth Obesity

Be A Fit Mama has formed a partnership with the RYSE Community Youth Organization in Richmond, Calif., to create and implement a dynamic, nine-week girls fitness program for the group’s members.
BERKELEY, Calif. - June 30, 2013 - PRLog -- With a 2011 report from Contra Costa Health Services stating more than 50 percent of the children in Richmond, Calif., are overweight or obese, the city faces an obesity epidemic. Be A Fit Mama, a San Francisco Bay Area personal health and fitness company for women, and the RYSE Community Youth Organization have created an innovative girls’ fitness program for the group’s members.

“We are ready to take a stand for the future health of the teens growing up in this community,” said Kenya Moses, founder of Be A Fit Mama and certified personal trainer. “The enthusiasm of the RYSE center staff and program participants is wonderful, and I am extremely excited to work with these young women and help them create blueprints for happier, healthier lives.”

The new health and fitness program, which begins July 1 and runs through Aug. 31, grew out of a conversation between Moses and Katherine Ebrahimi, the RYSE center’s community health coordinator. Both wanted to create a program that would teach healthy eating for teens and empower young women at RYSE, a community based leadership and educational justice organization. A non-profit partnership between the two groups and the new youth fitness program for girls was born.

The RYSE Youth Health and Fitness Program is an intensive, nine-week course of nutrition seminars, personal fitness training group classes, meditation and open general discussion sessions. A few of the goals for the program include:

Creating individual health and fitness plans for the nine-week course and beyond,

Exploring techniques for relieving stress and gaining energy,

Understanding the components of a healthy lifestyle,

Identifying healthy food choices, and

Empowering the individual for positive living and success.

The program also enhances learning by providing resources that can be used at home, furthering the spread of information about the importance of health and fitness throughout the Richmond community. To encourage the young women, the RYSE Youth Health and Fitness Program offers incentives for achieving goals such as gift cards, new sports equipment and gift cards for beauty and health treatments.

“After the conclusion of the program these young women will be more empowered to make healthy changes in their lives,” said Moses. “Using this vital information will improve their overall health and fitness levels and may reduce their risks of developing life-threatening illnesses later in life, not to mention developing the emotional capacity to persevere through life challenges.”
