The swimming pool system is actually pretty basic once you understand what it is doing.  For the basic swimming pool set up, it's a closed loop piping system which circulates water throughout your swimming pool.  Outside of the pool on that piping loop you have a pump which pushes the water through the pipes to keep the water circulating and then you have a filter which cleans the water as it passes through it.  Inside the swimming pool you have a skimmer which draws water in from the pool into the pipes for cleaning.  There you have a skimmer basket which collects any floating debris in the water.  Also in the pool are water intakes on the bottom of the pool which act to collect debris into the piping system that sinks to the bottom of the pool.  The thought here is that the debris will be caught in either the leaf basket on the pump or in the filter.

Both the pump and filter have two piping connections:  one for an inflow of water and one for an outflow of water.

There are some optional pieces of equipment that can be added to your pool system such as a heater, chlorine dispenser, water clarifiers, or even piping for a spa when you have a pool/spa combination.  But the above situation describes the most common pool system.
