Adults always view bullying as a major problem for children, but according to a new poll from the University of Michigan not all bullying behavior is equal.

The University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health recently showed that a substantial majority say schools should take action when students cause others to: 1) fear for their safety.; 2) feel embarrassed or humiliated; or 3) be subjected to negative rumors.

However, only 56 percent of adults surveyed indicated that schools should intervene when students cause others to be socially isolated.

"The key finding from this poll is that adults don't see behaviors across the bullying spectrum as equivalent," says Matthew M. Davis M.D., M.A.P.P., director of the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health. "This is concerning because isolating a student socially is considered to be a form of bullying, and a dangerous one” (because it may be linked to episodes of school violence and also teen suicide).
